Celtic Tree of Life : An Interactive Irish Blessing

Interactive Irish Blessing Generator: The Celtic Tree of Life

With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I wanted to build something special to celebrate. I’ll be loading something tomorrow as well. If you are looking for a unique way to bring your favorite Irish or Celtic poetry, prose, or blessing to life, I created this free, interactive Irish blessing generator. If you would like to create with parchment, my Irish blessing manuscript tool allows you to put in a passage and customize with artwork and script.

The Inspiration Behind the Tree

In ancient Irish mythology, the Tree of Life was of special importance. It was the heart and anchor of a village, and a symbol of an established tribe. To capture that feeling of something deeply rooted yet constantly reaching outward, I designed the center of this tool using a fractal.

The tree is built using a fractal coding technique called recursion, a mathematical rule that repeats itself over and over to create smaller and smaller branches. It is the same blueprint nature uses to grow real oak trees, ferns, and river deltas! This one is purely mathematical, but you can also make it using a more natural math-inclined formula. I will be featuring some of these types of fractals in posts coming up. How to Use the Irish Blessing Generator

How to Use the Irish Blessing Generator

I designed this to be a way to play with words and art. Here is how to make it your own:

  • Add Your Words: In the text box, type or paste a traditional Irish blessing, a favorite quote, or your own original poetry or prose. The tool will instantly take your text and wrap it in a continuous, flowing circle around the tree. I have added a few samples below.
  • Customize the Look: Use the sliders and color swatches to adjust the text size, change the ink color, and pick a background (like Parchment or Deep Forest).
  • Shape the Branches: Move your mouse (or drag your finger on mobile) across the canvas. The branches grow along with your movement.

A Few Classic Blessings to Try

Not sure what to type? Copy and paste one of these classic Irish blessings into the text box to see how it looks:

If you would like more samples of Irish poetry, my poetry hub page has a block to seach Guttenburg poetry and select from classical Irish poetry.

The Classic Journey

May the road rise up to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face;

the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,

may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

For the Home and Family

May your home always be too small to hold all your friends.

May the roof above you never fall in, and those gathered beneath it never fall out.

May the laughter of children grace your halls, and the warmth of the hearth bring peace to your walls.

Short & Sweet (Perfect for a larger text size!)

May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light,

May good luck pursue you each morning and night.

A Wish for Peace

May you have the hindsight to know where you’ve been,

the foresight to know where you’re going,

and the insight to know when you’re going too far.
