What is Found Poetry? Found poetry is the literary equivalent of a word collage. Instead of writing words from scratch, you “find” them in existing texts and rearrange them to create something new. It is a great way to explore how context changes meaning. It is somewhat similar to my deconstructed blackout poetry tool and my blackout poetry and prose tool.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter a Theme: Type a word into the search bar (e.g., “Love,” “Storm,” “Silence”).
  2. Dig Through the Archives: The tool instantly searches thousands of classic poems to find lines containing your word.
  3. Build Your Collage: Click the lines on the left to move them to your canvas on the right.
  4. Rearrange: Stack the lines to create a brand new poem.

This is an excellent exercise for teaching syntax and enjambment to middle schoolers and teens. Because students aren’t struggling to find vocabulary, they can focus entirely on the rhythm and flow of the lines.
