Choose from five genres (Literary, Horror, Mystery, Romance, and Sci-Fi) and get a full character profile with a name, age and biography, core personality, contradiction, desire, fear, secret and a physical detail. Every trait can be re-rolled individually, so you can mix and match until the character feels right. With thousands of possible combinations, no two character profiles are alike.

This is an example of a character the tool generated, and in fact the first one that came up. It could be used to create a complete story, an unassuming hero pulled into a dungeon or as character writing practice in a journal entry.

It was the gray-streaked hair that did him in; there were more on his head every time he looked in the mirror. That was the first thing he saw when he brushed his teeth, that and his crooked nose and weak blue eyes. Ugly, that’s what he was. It was no wonder he hadn’t been on a date for six months. If he were a woman, she would run away from David Park too. In the end, he was just a washed-up ex-journalist downgraded to teaching “Intro to Writing” to reluctant freshmen in community college. At night he would lie in bed and wonder where it all went wrong. It was a good thing he had an ace up his sleeve; it was positively delicious thinking about how things would explode when his memoir came out.

How to use this tool 

To create a character, select your genre tab at the top, choose from Literary, Horror, Mystery, Romance, or Sci-Fi. Click the “Generate” button to instantly build a complete profile. You won’t just get a name; you will get a combination of physical quirks, deep-seated fears, and unexpected features.

Maybe you will get a “timid librarian who collects sword replicas” or a “grumpy astronaut afraid of heights.” These contradictions are where the story is interesting.

Why it helps writers; flat characters kill stories. Our tool helps you fill out your story with generated characters. Once you find a combination you like, use the “Copy to Clipboard” button at the bottom to save the profile directly to your notes or manuscript.
